The results of a Glycolic Acid peel can be dramatic or minimal - depending on the strength (%) and intensity (pH level) of the peel. Seeing a drastic improvement in texture with just one peel is not usual, but best results will be had over time and with adequate skin preparation. Over the course of 5-8 treatments, a noticeable difference should be seen in fine lines, wrinkles and the effects of solar damage.
It may take 2-3 days to notice the results of a peel and there may also be more color to Solar Lentigines or hyperpigmentation (sunspots) for the first few days following a peel, until new skin cells grow. Results will vary with each application so it is important to be patient. Let the skin rejuvenate itself and wait the appropriate interval to perform the next peel.
The skin may turn pink, after a peel, but will return to its normal color within 1 to 2 days. A slight reddening of the skin may occur for a limited period of time especially with sensitive skin types.
It is normal for the skin to “peel” and appear flaky 1 to 2 days after a peel application. This is the result of the skin cells sloughing and means the peel was effective. This shedding of dead skins cells is allowing a healthy skin cell layer to be generated and push to the surface. If heavy peeling or slight scabbing occurs, apply a non-petroleum based product to help re-hydrate and moisturize the skin.
The amount of skin sloughing may vary and is not directly proportional to the results. Many times there is little visible flaking. This does not mean the peel was not effective. Most of the loosened skin comes off during daily cleansing. If the skin “feels” smoother, then the peel has produced positive results.
Use of a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is essential. Glycolic Acid may make skin more sensitive to the sun, be certain adequate sunscreen protection is provided while using a Glycolic Acid product and for several weeks after a final treatment.
