KELOID

A keloid — sometimes referred to as a keloid scar — is a tough scar that rises on certain areas of the skin. They are genrally pink in color. Keloids also have an irregular shape and enlarge progressively. Compared to regular scars, keloids by and large do not subside over time.

How do they develop?

Keloid is the body's tendency to heal a scar with excess tissue. This scar is called as keloid. Sometimes keloid occurs without any trauma or injury also.

Can you give some examples of cases where keloids can occur?

Keloids can develop in areas after trauma. Its very common in the chest area in people who have tendency to develop keloids. Acne can also heal with keloid formation. Ear piercing is another very common reason for keloid. Even synthetic or tight clothing or excessive friction can lead to keloid formation.

Why can’t I have my keloid simply removed surgically?

Keloids usually grow back after surgical removal. Often times larger than they were.

How will my keloid get treated?

We have two modalities of treatment. One is injectable. One will have to come for 3 weekly follow up during each visit the keloid will be treated with intra lesional medications.

Other treatment is the CRYOTHERAPY where the lesion is frozen from inside out with nitrous oxide. This too will require few sessions at 3 weekly intervals.
